Tips #1 - Moving Tips

Moving Tips: Here are some crucial moving tips for you!

Make a list

To ensure a smooth moving experience, proper planning is key! Make lists that include restricted items that should not be packed, list of supplies needed such as boxes, tape bubble wrap, etc, and a list of things you may need on the first night of your new place, such as unpacking tools, cleaning supplies, food, and more. But don’t forget your to-do list once you’re at your new place! It’s easy to get overwhelmed when a lifetime of your work is sorted in the boxes. So get moving with the help of your list!

Why is a list necessary when you’re moving?

  • It's the most effective approach to keep track of and organize your belongings (if you do it the right way)

  • You'll be able to simply break down your huge plans into items, which will then be broken down into tasks.

  • You'll be able to determine your priorities.

  • You'll be able to track your progress more readily (what gets done)

  • You'll clear your mind and feel less stressed (know which one to start first)

  • You're not going to forget anything.

  • You'll undoubtedly be able to better manage your time.

  • To-do lists will help you stay motivated, especially when you cross off each item as it is accomplished (setting up the furniture, putting the clothes away, etc)

  • It will assist you in visualizing your plans

Making a list is simple. But following through with it may be harder than it seems, especially when we are tired from all the moving process. Post-moving fatigue is a real thing and it can lead to burnout, stress, lack of energy and more. Therefore, it is important to take a rest from time to time so you can recharge.

But good news!

Making a list is no longer a hassle. With the help of the apps on our phone, we can make the whole process easier. Basic apps like the Notes or Memo in our phone can be a good platform for us to write our list. However, if you tend to forget things, reminder apps like nTask, Wunderlist and more allow you to list down your task, and they will pop you a notification to remind you. Taking advantage of all these technologies can make our moving process easier. So download these apps and start planning away! Writing on paper is very 2000, let’s save the earth, and save ourselves from the moving stress!

Say goodbye to unused stuff

Moving time is also a great opportunity for the long awaited spring-cleaning. Use this time to get rid of unwanted and unused stuff, and try not to bring those into your new place, where you risk cluttering it again. Although it’s easier said than done, it is possible to do it. There are a lot of methods on the internet that are beneficial when it comes to getting rid of our stuff, this includes the infamous KonMari method that was created by Marie Kondo. Her method is simple, if you find a spark in the stuff that you’re holding, you get to keep it. If you feel that this method will not work for you, you can always look up for other tips!

Saying goodbye to your unused stuff does not mean throwing it away. You can always donate it to a person in need. There are a lot of charities that require a lot of support, and you can arrange a time for them to come and pick up the donations. This will not only ease your burden in packing for your new place, it will also help a good cause. Household appliances, furniture, old toys would be beneficial for these charities.

But don’t throw away the memorabilia or the mementos that mean a lot to you! You'd miss those things, and regret it later.

However, if you feel like you need the extra money, you can re-sell your old goods. A lot of websites and apps give a platform for people to resell their pre-loved items. In some cases, you can sell it for a good price, depending on the state of your items. This will help you to get rid of your old clothing and let you gain some income. A lot of people now are more interested in buying used items rather than the new ones, like fast fashion to help reduce waste.

So don’t let your items go to waste!

Get Sturdy, Uniform Packing Supplies

It is crucial to use sturdy and uniform packing supplies to ensure that your belongings do not fall apart when shipping. When wrapping or packing things, it is also advisable to use secure packaging like bubble wraps, masking tape, air pillows, and fragile adhesive tapes especially when you are shipping fragile items.

  1. Boxes: There are lots of options for finding cheap or free moving boxes. You can recycle your old boxes or ask your friends and family. If there is none, your local convenience stores or supermarkets always have a lot to offer, however it is essential that you must find a sturdy one.

If there is none, your last option is you could buy at Boxman or online platforms like Shopee and Lazada. Don’t forget to pick a variety of sizes and ensure the boxes are in good condition.

  1. Bubble wrap: Bubble wrap is crucial when it comes to packing things as it will keep your items protected during the move. And best of all, you can buy it at office supply or department stores inexpensively. Aside from bubble wrap, you can also use air pillows and packing peanut foams to secure your items in the boxes.

  2. Labelling: When packing, you might put all of your things in one box and forget what’s in it. To avoid this, you should label all your boxes. You can use several methods for this such as using waterproof markers, colored stickers or creating a numbering system based on the categories. This would save your time and energy when you unpack your things.

  3. Dolly: Carrying boxes from one place to another can be very tiring. To prevent this, you can rent a dolly from a home improvement store or moving company as it makes your moving much easier. Best yet, call Gracia Orbis! We can make your life easier.

Pack the basics yourself

We provide all the necessary services, but some things require privacy! Whether it be your own clothes, personal electronics and other precious valuables, pack those, and we'll figure out the rest.

Moving can be extremely time consuming, so to save time, start packing your basic items such as clothes, electronics, kitchenware, and all the other valuables in your possession.

You can definitely depend on the moving company to move all the heavier items, but certain items are private. With that being said, you definitely wouldn’t want a mover to personally pack your undergarments and toiletries or your expensive possessions like jewellery and gadgets.

Hence, those items are ensured to be safely packed (with less embarrassment too!). When you pack jewellery however, you can recycle some items to help you—you can try stringing necklaces through straws or toilet paper rolls to keep them from being tangled, reuse, reduce, recycle!

Another tip is to label each box with the room it's destined for and a description of its contents, since they are basic items after all. This will help you and your movers know where every box belongs in your new place. Numbering each box and keeping an inventory list in a small notebook is a good way to keep track of what you've packed―and to make sure you still have everything when you unpack.

It is likely that you'll know about a move (even if you're not sure of the final destination) weeks or even months in advance. With that, you could start packing the items that you won't miss, and that includes books and other once-in-a-while items. When it's finally time to move, all the basic items will already be ready to go, giving you less to worry about.
